Well, not completely... It seems that we have a mountain, right here in Lake County.
SUGARLOAF MOUNTAIN is the fifth highest point in Florida. It is the highest point in the peninsula of Florida. At 312' above sea level, it is the most prominent high point in the state.
There are higher elevations in the panhandle near the Alabama border, the highest is called Britton Hill.
Sugarloaf Mountain is a favorite location for bicyclists and motorcyclists to visit with it's remote location and 13% grade.
I grew up in Lake County and had never gone there. My Dad liked to go and often would mention it to me. Until yesterday, I wasn't even sure where it was located. Well.... finally, I found myself with the time and place to make it happen!
Kathy and I are staying in Tavares, Florida while waiting for our home loan to close, and decided to take a scenic drive today. Leaving Tavares southbound on Highway 19, turning south on County Road 561 for 12.6 miles to Sugarloaf Mountain Road. When you turn left onto this road, there it is...
Straight up..!
We started up the hill and passed one bicyclist... struggling towards the top. Near the top, was a refreshment tent... water for the cyclists...
When we topped the hill we were amazed!
What a view!
Lake Apopka in the distance....
The Orlando skyline...
A group of bikers were enjoying the view...
We took their pictures so they could all be in the photos.
Just WOW!
Looking up on the back side of the mountain.
Looking down from the top...
On our way back we decided to turn east on County Road 455. We went through Ferndale, Montverde, Oakland, Winter Garden, Ocoee, Maitland, Altamonte Springs, Apopka, Zellwood, Tangerine, Mt. Dora, Eustis and on to Tavares.
Kathy and I are thanking and praising God for allowing us to move to such a beautiful state. Florida is still an awesome place, with many unspoiled rural areas...
Take a ride and enjoy it too...
